The Different Stages of Unbelief
Going through Psalm 77 & following Asaph through the different stages of unbelief & victory
1)Thinking of God as a burden instead of a Blessing
2)The critical spirit increasing its complaints towards God
3)His spirit agitated instead of soothed & calmed
4)Lack of sleep & anxiety forbidding heart rest
5)Trouble only deepening & God seeming even further off
6)Memory recalling God's mercies, but only to wake up distrust
Then, the turning point! He asks-"Where's the difference? The change...
Is it in God, or is it in ME?"
Asaph realizes its HIS unbelief, HIS folly... HIS infirmity...and finally gives God the benefit of the doubt...
That God is always faithful.
That God's children are always dear to Him...
His grace is never exhausted, and His promise unfailing.
Instead of fixing his eyes on his troubles, Asaph then fixes his whole mind & heart on God... remembering His miracles of power & love, and remembering the mystery of who God is, & that God is always in charge.
The practical lesson? Faith triumphs through the tensions once again !!!
What gifts these Psalms are... Teaching US to be more vulnerable, so WE can be more approachable :-)
